MisterWives

MisterWives creates the type of music that simply makes you happy, and that is exactly what they did for me at their concert.

MisterWives is an indie-pop band and consists of lead singer Mandy Lee, percussionist Etienne Bowler, bass guitarist William Hehir, guitarist Marc Campbell, multi-instrumentalist Jesse Blum, and saxophonist Mike Murphy.

The band performed at the St. Andrews Hall in Detroit on Monday, Nov. 2.

The venue was originally supposed to be The Fillmore, but due to lack of ticket sales it was moved to St. Andrews. I thought the new venue was great.

St. Andrews Hall had an atmosphere that gave an old-fashioned, retro feel.

There weren’t any large screens, and the Hall was small, making it more personal and easier to connect with the music. There was even a balcony along the perimeter, surrounding a disco ball that hung from the ceiling.

I had the opportunity to be quite close to the stage, considering it was standing room only, making the experience even better.

The first opening act was CRUISR, their music being a mix of indie-pop and surf-pop.

The band consists of Andy States, lead singer and guitarist, Jon Van Dine, drummer, Kyle Cook, bassist, and Bruno Catrambone, guitarist.

The second act was Waters, a rock band.

The band consists of Van Pierszalowski, the vocalist and guitarist, Brian DaMert, guitarist, bassist Greg Sellin, drummer Andrew Wales, and Sara DaMert, who played the keyboard.

I preferred CRUISR as opposed to Waters. My favorite song of CRUISR’s was “Throw Shade.”

Both CRUISR and Waters focused their music on being who you are and surrounding yourself with good people. Those messages are what MisterWives strives to show in their music too.

MisterWives  played songs from their album,”Our Own House.”

This album focuses on staying true to yourself, not letting anyone change you, and having an imagination like no other.

Before the band came onto the stage, they truly showcased their theme by playing “Pure Imagination” from “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.”

My favorite part, while MisterWives was on stage, was when lead singer Mandy Lee got down and did push-ups while telling the crowd that it is OK to be yourself; whether you identify as transgender, male, female, or lesbian, for example. Lee did those push-ups to show that she is a woman who will not back down and confine herself to the expectations of a woman.

After this powerful gesture, the band played “Not Your Way,” which perfectly showed a retaliation to inequality.

Some other great songs they played were “Our Own House,” “Reflections,” “Vagabond,” and “No Need for Dreaming.”

Overall, the concert was unforgettable.
