March is Reading Month: Realistic fiction adds a twist to real-life events

Realistic fiction introduces readers to events that have the possibility of happening. By creating these pieces of work, the author has the ability to take something that could happen to anyone and adding their personal view and twist on the event.

Below are two pieces that are worth reading to anyone who enjoys a good thrill.

“Thirteen Reasons Why” by Jay Asher

In this novel, teenager Hannah Baker takes her own life due to the series of tragic events that take place in her life.

As the story progresses, Clay Jensen receives a box with 13 cassette tapes. He proceeds to dig deeper and realizes that Baker was attempting to tell her story and explain herself through the tapes.

Each cassette is designated to a different character in the novel. Baker explains how each individual played a part in her life, as well as her death.

After listening to each tape, Jensen believes it’s his duty to find closure for Baker.

Junior Mallory Simms said the book left her thinking about her life.

“It just makes you sit and think,” Simms said. “It teaches readers that we should realize how much of impact our actions have on others.”

“The Cellar” by Natasha Preston

The novel begins with the disappearance of 16-year-old Summer Robinson.

As Robinson is wandering through the woods, a man appears and calls her by the name of Lily.

Later, readers learn that Robinson was abducted by a man named Colin.

He keeps Robinson in a basement, with other young girls. Each girl is named after a flower.

The story is told through different perspectives, which makes the novel even more of a page-turner.

Junior Chloe Clarambeau enjoyed that the novel showed each character’s personality.

“I liked the personalities of the girls and how you were able to relate to them,” Clarambeau said. “Even though you can’t relate to their circumstances.”
