Evan Keith Wilson is a student, musician, and leader within the Kearsley community. Born on April 19, 2008, Wilson has spent much of his time in school developing his skills as a multi-instrumentalist, while taking on leadership roles that extend beyond the band room. Through dedication, discipline, and a strong sense of responsibility, he has become a key figure at Kearsley High School.
Wilson began his musical journey in 2019 when he joined the Armstrong Middle School beginning band as a sixth grader. He selected percussion without much prior thought, but it did not take long for that choice to become something more meaningful. Early on, Wilson found himself forced to become acquainted with mallet percussion, as his classmates refused to, as they did not like the mallet instruments, which eventually led to Wilson becoming a dependable member of his section. By eighth grade, he began to better understand the commitment required in music and realized that he wanted to continue developing his skills beyond middle school.
Entering Kearsley High School, Wilson auditioned for the drumline and earned a spot on the snareline as a freshman. This was a notable achievement, as placement in the upper battery (snare and tenor drums) can be difficult, particularly for new members, as he was. Over time, his consistency and work ethic allowed him to advance within the section. During his sophomore year and on, Wilson has been selected as center snare, a role that carries significant responsibility. As center snare, Wilson serves as a leader within the drumline. His role involves setting tempo, demonstrating proper technique, and helping ensure the marching band as a whole remains unified and consistent. He works closely with both new and experienced members, offering guidance and support during rehearsals. The position requires balancing musical precision with leadership and communication skills. Wilson later became drumline section leader, further solidifying his role as a mentor and example for others in the program.
In addition to marching band, Wilson has been actively involved in concert percussion and Solo and Ensemble events. Wilson is involved in Jazz Band, Pit Orchestra, Percussion Ensemble, Wind Ensemble, and Symphonic Band. Over the years, he has prepared and performed multiple solos and ensembles, earning high ratings at both district and state levels. He has performed on marimba and vibraphone, including the preparation of a technically demanding four-mallet vibraphone solo. Alongside these performances, Wilson has continued to expand his musical abilities by learning trombone and cornet as well as composing pieces for both his school’s wind ensemble and percussion ensemble.
Outside of band, Wilson is involved in several extracurricular activities that reflect his commitment to leadership and service. He serves as class treasurer and student council treasurer, roles that require organization, communication, and accountability. He is also an essential member of the quiz bowl team.
Additionally, through the Genesee Career Institute, Wilson is in his 2nd year as part of the Teacher Cadet Program, and through this program, Wilson student-teaches at Armstrong Middle School, in the band program, assisting younger students in the same program where his interest in music first began. Wilson has helped individual students, small groups, and has even taught and conducted an entire song to the whole AMS band. Through this experience, he has gained hands-on exposure to teaching and mentoring, reinforcing his interest in music education.
Family plays an important role in Wilson’s life. He has one older brother, five half-siblings, and two step-brothers. In August of 2024, Wilson experienced the loss of his older brother, an event that significantly shaped his perspective and outlook for his future. He credits his family, best friends, Vik and Jaeda, and his girlfriend as essential sources of support and stability.
As Wilson states, “Without my family, friends, and girlfriend, I would be a homeless loser.” Their presence has helped him remain focused and motivated during challenging times.
In his free time, Wilson enjoys playing video games, particularly those with complex goals and strong narratives. While gaming serves as a way to relax, it also reflects his interest in structure, goals, and progression.
“Playing video games, with friends or alone, is a surefire way for me to lose track of time and my responsibilities,” says Wilson, “All the games I play have complex, multi-step goals, and after I make a to-do list and actually do it, I have long lost track of real-world boundaries.”
Looking toward the future, Wilson plans to attend Central Michigan University to study music education. His goal is to become a band director, combining his passion for music with his interest in teaching and mentorship. While in college, he hopes to become a member of the marching Chippewas and continue performing music at a high level.
Through his leadership as section leader, involvement in school activities, and commitment to music education, Evan Wilson has established himself as a dedicated and dependable member of the Kearsley community. His many efforts, both inside and outside the band room, demonstrate a clear focus on growth, responsibility, and making a positive impact on others.
