The Genesee Career Institute is a skill center that is in the GISD school district. Many students from all different schools around the county attend the GCI career institute. There are all kinds of classes like advanced nursing, medical career foundations, medical assistant, forensic science, welding, agriculture, 911 dispatch, electrical wiring, veterinarian, firefighters, JROTC, mechanics, etc.
Senior, Vanessa Hood, is a current student in the advanced nursing program at GCI. “I am in advanced nursing, and I am in this class because it is a start to the career that I am working towards. It provides more education to a career that interests me,” stated Hood. She is planning to pursue a career in the medical field in the near future.
Hood has learned many useful skills while in her advanced nursing class at GCI. She plans on using those skills in her future career in the health field. “Most likely, like for example we learn med-term which can help anyone that wants to go into the health field no matter the career. Also, since we were able to participate in clinical and take care of real people it allows us to apply what we learn in the classroom into real life experiences,” explains Hood. Med-term is short for medical terminology. It is the study of word parts used in the medical field. It helps you to break down words you come across in the medical field that you don’t know.
Hood has used this opportunity to her advantage to prepare for her future. “It shows me a job opportunity in the medical field through hands on experiences. It provides resources to learn more about the medical field in high school. Personally it showed me work places I would possibly be interested in working in. Like for example I would not want to work in a hospital but would work in a long-term care facility or an office,” described Hood.
Senior Hood has already started to think about and start planning her future career plans. “Since I will have my CNA after I graduate, I want to work in a doctors office or a long-term care facility while in college. I would then want to get into medical school to earn and continue my education and achieve my doctorate. I want to work towards earning a degree in kinesiology or physical therapy,” specified Hood. Hood has her future pretty much already figured out and she is ready to take the next leap toward her career once she graduates.
Senior, Vanessa Hood, is one of the many students that attend GCI to work towards their future career goals. There are many other students in all different areas of different careers at the Genesee Career Institute.
