Jon McKay, senior, runs in his Olympic jersey.

After signing in February with Madonna University to run track, senior Jon McKay’s luck just keeps getting better.

Recruiters asked McKay to try out for the U.S. track and field team to compete in the 2016 Olympic Games.

The 2016 Olympic Team Trials for track and field take place July 1-10 at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Ore. The trials will decide who runs for Team USA in the Olympics.

The games take place this summer in Rio. McKay is excited for the invitation.

“I think I have a shot,” McKay said. “After all, I’m second fastest in the state and have been running track for four years.”

McKay has done well running track for Kearsley.

He was the first one in school history to take first place in four different races in the 2015 Flint Metro League Championship.

His (McKay’s) diligent training is finally paying off for him. I think he could do well in the Olympics.

— Mr. Paul Adas, Kearsley track coach

McKay is proud of himself and hopes life takes him far.

“I’ve done really well in Kearsley track and I think I could be a threat to the people competing (in the Olympics),” McKay said. “After all, I am the best.”

Mr. Paul Adas, track coach, is happy that McKay has this opportunity.

“Jon works hard,” Adas said. “He strives to be the best he can be, and his diligent training is finally paying off for him. I think he could do well in the Olympics.”
