“Bridge of Spies” debuted in theaters on Oct. 15.

The thriller “Bridge of Spies” premiered in theaters Oct. 15, and over the course of its opening weekend made $15.3 million.

I personally feel that this movie was fantastic and is now one of my all-time favorite movies.

The movie, which stars Tom Hanks, is based on a true story about James B. Donovan, an insurance lawyer who was called upon by the U.S. government to aid his country during the Cold War.

The CIA recruits him to be a defense lawyer for a suspected Soviet spy, Rudolf Abel (Mark Rylance). Their goal is to show that everybody in the United States gets a fair trial, but Donovan actually believes that. He doesn’t just do his job, he goes above and beyond for Abel, appealing his case and keeping him from the death penalty.

Later on, Donovan is called upon again when a U-2 plane pilot crashes in Soviet territory and is captured by the Soviet government. The CIA wants him to travel to East Berlin (which has just been walled off, and is considered by Germany at least to be a sovereign nation) and negotiate a trade, which is Abel for the pilot Francis Gary Powers (Austin Stowell).

Donovan is a person that I believe we should all strive to be like; he fights for what he knows is right even if it goes against the opinion of the majority. In the movie, Abel describes him as a man who is kicked down but gets back up.

I believe that to be an extraordinary quality and hope that someone will describe me that way some day.

Another aspect of the film that I really liked was that it made it hard to distinguish who was really the good and bad guy. Normally, it would be easy to say that the United States is the good guy, but the movie puts a harsh light on the government.

Overall, the movie is addicting from the very beginning, and director Steven Spielberg does a wonderful job of showing the intensity of the situation. I think he has made another blockbuster hit. Hanks has a standout performance and I really believed that he was Donovan — he got so far into character.

I highly recommend history lovers see this movie, as well as people who like suspense. I give this movie five out of five stars, and could spend all day talking about how great it is.
