The inaugural powder puff championship had fans standing in the final moment as the juniors’ miraculous come-from-behind play finished off the seniors.

Final score, 20-14. Juniors win.

The first half began with junior Kayla Meyer scoring a 42-yard touchdown with 14:40 remaining.

Alexis Allen, junior, kicked the conversion, which scores two points in powder puff, giving the juniors an 8-0 lead.

For the rest of the half, defense ruled as neither team’s offense found its spark.

Leading the senior team in defense was Brooke Crow with a 3-yard tackle for a loss at 1:08, stopping the junior drive on a fourth down, along with a touchdown-saving tackle at 0:03 that stopped junior Lexi Kelly on a 35-yard run.

Crow was motivated by her desire to keep the juniors from winning.

“I really didn’t want the juniors to win, I wanted to win,” Crow said. “After the game I was upset, but I knew how exciting it was to beat the seniors as a junior.”

The seniors won the game last year.

This year, the seniors closed out the half well when senior Neci Dell sprinted a 30-yard touchdown run with 40 seconds left on the clock. Megan Livingston kicked the extra points.

The first half concluded deadlocked 8-8.

Things started to look up for the seniors in the second half when senior Haley Flynn swept to the left, made it around the corner, and dashed 62 yards for a touchdown at 14:09.

Livingston’s kick missed to the right, but the seniors went up 14-8.

Flynn said that when she burst past the defensive line and saw the field open up, she said to herself, “Don’t fall.”

“That’s all I could think of,” she said. “Do not fall on your face.”

At 8:25 remaining, senior Reyana Rivera intercepted junior quarterback Chloe Jankowski’s pass.  But the senior drive came to a halt when junior Aubrey Scott picked off senior quarterback Tori Niles’ pass just three minutes later.

Finally, the entirety of the game boiled down to the last minute.

With fourth down and a half yard to gain on the 6-yard line, the juniors were close to scoring with only 48 seconds left on the clock.

The juniors picked up the first down, and then on the next play Brittney Dick plunged into the end zone on a 4-yard run with only 39 seconds left in the game.

In a huge play, the seniors’ defensive line blocked junior Alexis Allen’s extra-points kick.

The score stood tied, 14-14.

But the seniors had one more possession to try to break the deadlock.

However, junior Loren Jolin showed her feisty side when she made two 8-yard tackles for a loss — one on second down at 0:19 and one on third down at 0:12, forcing the seniors to punt.

The juniors took possession on the seniors’ 40-yard line after the punt, and a timeout was called with 12 ticks left on the clock.

During the timeout, junior Coach Jack Linn made the plan for Jankowski to fake a pass to junior Brandi Morgan and actually pass to Kelly.

Just as the clock hit 0:00, Kelly made a 40-yard touchdown catch, securing the six-point victory for the juniors.

As soon as Jankowski saw Kelly catch the pass with no defenders behind her, Jankowski said her thought was “we won.”

After she said that, she paused, thought for a moment, and then said, “I don’t know what I was thinking. I was jumping up and down. We won.”

The star of the game, Jankowski was 6-for-10 passing, totaling 69 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

She said she was pleased with the win and happy for her team.

“I think we were the underdogs in this,” Jankowski said. “Everyone was thinking the seniors were going to crush us. I’m happy my team came to work hard and wanted to win.”
