Football falls to Flushing on Patriot’s Day

The football team lost to Flushing on Friday, Sept. 11, at home with a final score of 35-20.

The Raiders (2-1, 1-0) came out of the gates strong on a 38-yard interception returned for a touchdown at 10:19 of the first quarter. The interception was one of the first plays of the game.

Flushing scored three more touchdowns, leading 28-0, before the Hornets could get on the board.

At 10:11 of the second quarter, senior defensive back Tyler Schwerin struck first for the Hornets, returning an interception for a touchdown. Junior Tony Doolan kicked the extra point.

Flushing scored on a 10-yard run about four minutes later, closing out the scoring for the first half.

Down 35-7 at halftime, the Hornets did not allow Flushing to score in the second half.

Junior wide receiver Darrion Younger lead the second-half attack for the Hornets, catching two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter, both thrown by sophomore Tommy Plunkey.

The first was a 32-yard touchdown reception, and the second was a 3-yard toss scored with 12 seconds left in the game.

Doolan’s extra point scored on the first touchdown but failed on the second.

Senior wide receiver Matthew Parkinson was injured in the first quarter and was unable to return.

Kearsley’s offensive leaders were Plunkey, who was 12-for-30 passing for 190 yards and two touchdowns, sophomore Christian Pinkney, who had nine carries for 72 yards, and Younger, who had nine receptions for 135 yards and two touchdowns.

On defense, the Hornets were led by senior Ryan Bennett.

Bennett recorded eight tackles with seven of them solo. He also had three tackles for a loss and one sack.

The Hornets, now 1-2 on the season and 0-1 in the league, picked up one more first down than last year’s Metro League runners-up.

Kearsley’s next contest is Friday, Sept. 18, at Holly.
