Three cheap, do-it-yourself costumes for Halloween

With Halloween right around the corner, people are scrambling to find an easy costume idea. You could spend $40 on a cheaply-made costume that you’ll only wear once, or you could save money and have some fun by making a costume yourself.

Making your own costume allows you to customize each detail, and it could save you a good amount of money depending on what you use to make it.

These costumes will shout creativity and imagination, and set you apart from the crowd.

1.) A bag of jellybeans

For this costume all you need is a clear garbage bag and some balloons. You can find both of these things at your local dollar store. For this DIY, you take your garbage bag and cut holes for your arms, legs, and head.

Then you blow up the balloons and fit as many as you can in the garbage bag, finishing the costume off with little decorations like ribbons in your hair or colorful makeup. You can also add your favorite name brand logo of jellybeans to look official.

This costume looks better when you use multi-colored balloons to make it look like you are a bag full of different flavored jellybeans.

2.) Mermaid Man

This half of the dynamic duo Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy has been popping up in people’s childhoods since 1999. Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy are iconic characters from the beloved Nickelodeon cartoon “Spongebob Squarepants.”

To make this costume you need green tights, an orange shirt, a black pair of shorts, long kitchen-like gloves, and pink slippers.

After putting this costume on, you’ll have the power to save Bikini Bottom in a matter of minutes.

If you’re really invested in this costume, you can even find the matching set of Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy rings that give them their powers, which are an essential for staying true to character.

“I think it was unique,” Bishoff said. “It was something different for Mallory and I to make and wear compared to other friend costumes.”

3.) “Grease” characters

This classic musical has been a source of group, partner, and solo Halloween costumes for years.

The relatable characters, catchy tunes, and vintage clothing make it an obvious choice when it comes to D-I-Y-ing a last-minute Halloween outfit.

If you decide to become a “Grease” character, you can choose to transform into multiple people from the film. You can be a Pink Lady, like Rizzo or Frenchie, or you could be a T-Bird, like Danny or Kenickie.

The main female character, Sandy, is an easy character to recreate for a costume. You will need a yellow skirt, a yellow cardigan, and a white top to transform into the Sandy who is portrayed in the majority of the film.

Another option is to become Sandy from the last sequence of the musical, where she completely changes her appearance. For this, you will need an entirely black ensemble including a leather jacket and jeans.

This look will impress anyone who sees it and will make them sing “You’re The One That I Want” on a continuous loop for the rest of their day.
