Roads may see a fix now that Gov. Rick Snyder has signed a road-funding bill.

Gov. Rick Snyder signed a road funding package on Tuesday, Nov. 10.

But motorists may have to wait several years before seeing results on the road.

This $1.2 billion package will go toward repairing roads and bridges, but some taxes will not begin until 2017 and all of the $1.2 billion will not go into effect until 2021.

The state Legislature passed the bill on Tuesday, Nov. 3, after working on it the last four years.

The law will raise annual vehicle registration fees 20 percent. For people paying $100 fees, they will now have to pay $120.

The fuel tax will also be raised.

Regular gasoline will rise 7.3 cents, while diesel will hike up 11.3 cents by January 2017.

The total federal and state gas tax, with sales tax, would jump to 59.54 cents a gallon compared to the previous 52.24 cents per gallon.

Mr. Andy Nester, political science teacher, believes new roads are important but does not like the structure of the law.

“It is what Michigan needs,” Nester said. “But I don’t want higher taxes. It is hurting the middle and lower class.”
