Senior Kayla Smith (left) and freshman Hunter May pose with their gift cards after having the top two student brackets in The Eclipse March Madness Bracket Challenge.

Now that March Madness has come to a close, so have all of the bracket games, including The Eclipse’s first ever bracket challenge.

Mr. Darrick Puffer, journalism teacher, placed first in the bracket.

But, since he is a staff member at KHS, he will not be receiving any prizes.

The runner-up was senior Kayla Smith, winning a $10 gift card to McDonald’s.

Freshman Hunter May placed third in the bracket, winning a $5 gift card to the same location.

With 77 participants, there was a lot of competition for Smith and May to beat out.

Smith was excited to win a gift card.

She said she used statistics to help her pick her bracket.

“I feel good about winning,” Smith said. “I picked all of my picks based on which teams had the highest percentages of winning.”

May was also “happy” to beat most of his competitors.

“I keep up with basketball a lot,” May said. “I was confident North Carolina would win, but they didn’t.”

Fortunately, no one picked Villanova to win, so this did not hurt May’s bracket.
