Seniors are awarded for their accomplishments at the Honor’s Convocation.

Every year the very best of Kearsley’s seniors are honored at the Honor’s Convocation.

Department awards were handed out and students were commended on their successful high school careers at the June 5 ceremony in the auditorium.

Miss Laura Pence, Spanish teacher, is one of the people that chooses who will receive the world language department award. Seniors in Spanish IV or French IV have to write an essay in that language about why they should win the award.

Pence said, “We read the essays without names on them, and we base who wins the award on grammar and content.”

Seniors who win these awards feel honored and emotional because they know that it is their teachers who chose them to win the awards. They also know that all of their hard work in school has paid off.

Kennedy Krist was one of the nine seniors to receive a department award. She was chosen by her teachers to receive the world language department award.

“I felt honored to be the one chosen for the departmental award out of all the other seniors in a foreign language,” Krist said. “It felt like all my hard work through my four years of Spanish really paid off.”

The other students chosen to receive a departmental award were:

Kayla Emmendorfer– Business

Dylan Brewer– Career Technical and Science

Alicia Konsez– Language Arts

Aaron Haack– Mathematics

John Howard– Physical Education

Hannah Smith– Social Science

Sierra Cherubini– Visual Arts

However, students are not just awarded by departments at the Honor’s Convocation. They are also awarded scholarships.

Every year seniors can apply for Kearsley scholarships, and it is at the Honor’s Convocation that the recipients are named.

Alexandra Hartwick received three scholarships: the George Daly College Scholarship, the Jane and Aubrey Burgtorf Memorial Scholarship, and the Paul A. Webster Memorial Scholarship.

Hartwick was proud of herself.

“When Mr. Wiskur kept saying my name it took a lot not to cry because I was so happy,” Hartwick said.
