Seniors Dylan Brewer (left), Ben Roof, Ruth Erickson, and Aaron Haack receive medals at the 10th annual Mott Math Competition on March 20. They tied with a team from Flushing.

The Mathletes rolled in with blazing calculators to the 10th Annual Mott Math Competition on March 20.

Their calculators were lighted with so much fire that one of the three teams tied with a Flushing team for first place out of 28.

The team that won first place consisted of seniors Ruth Erickson, Ben Roof, Dylan Brewer, and Aaron Haack. They answered 35 out of 48 questions correctly.

“It felt amazing to be able to represent Kearsley and win first place as a team,” Roof said. “I think that everyone did well, and although I may have struggled on some problems, we all contributed to win.”

The second team came in 20th with a score of 14, and the third team came in 24th place with a score of 10.

Junior Shelby Coates said the contest pushed her math abilities.

“I think that the competition was a challenge but was worth it,” Coates said. “Even though we didn’t know how to solve all of the problems and placed low as a team, we worked through it the best we could.”

As a district, Kearsley came in fourth place, one place away from winning team medals.

“I had a lot of fun, and I would definitely do it again,” Coates said.
