The KHS band participated in the Band & Orchestra Festival on Friday, Feb. 23.

They scored a 2 overall and the best score you can earn is a 1.

Junior Lance Hawkins said the band came really close to getting the best rating.

“I think festival went well since we did really good with our music, and we pulled it together better than expected,” Hawkins said. “We only ended up getting a 2, but we were only one point away from getting a 1, so we did pretty good.”

I think we represented ourselves well, musically and professionally.

Ms. Alison Phelps, band director, said intonation was the one thing keeping them from getting a 1.

But Phelps was pleased with overall performance.

“They exceeded my expectations,” Phelps said. “I think we represented ourselves well, musically and professionally.”

During festival, bands play three songs and then play a fourth song by sight reading.

The bands are judged and scored by each individual song based on intonation, rhythm, technique, and interpretation.

The scores are averaged and then a final rating is awarded.

Senior Grace Hoffman said the band’s performance, most of the time, was better than they had ever practiced.

“I think it went really good,” Hoffman said. “(For) two of three pieces we played, (it) was the best we have ever played them.”
