Hunting fires up again today, Wednesday, Nov. 15.

The 15-day firearm hunt is something millions of Americans will be a part of.

Families take a week off to sit back and enjoy their hunting spree while they can.

Senior Brooke Mannor has been hunting with her family since she was 13.

Every year Mannor and her family go Up North for the first week of November to spend time together.

“I usually go Up North to my cabin in Glennie, Michigan,” Mannor said. “I go with my dad, Uncle Mike, and Uncle Pat. But I mostly hunt with my dad.”

Senior Aaron Root also enjoys going hunting every year. Root has been hunting for three years, ever since his dad introduced him to bow hunting.

Root plans on hunting in West Branch this year.

His family has a different kind of tradition for the hunting season.

Root said, “We put money in (a pool), and the first one to get a deer wins the money.”

Junior Nick Williams enjoys hunting with his family.

Junior Nick Williams likes to hunt at his cabin on Bois Blanc Island in Mackinac County and has been since he was 12.

“We’ve always gone with my dad and my grandpa’s two friends, which they are basically family, and my grandpa before he passed away,” Williams said.

It’s important to be safe while you’re out hunting, but also not to become discouraged when you aren’t having much luck.

Be sure to always have bright orange somewhere on your clothing while you’re out in the woods. It will keep you safe, but its also a requirement in the state of Michigan.

Try to avoid going out alone, but if you are, make it a habit to tell friends or family where you’re going and what time you plan on coming back just in case something happens.

“Just because you don’t get a deer one year, doesn’t mean you should quit,” Williams said. “Keep trying.”
