The robotics team, called the Hybrid Hornets, advanced to the world championship after placing 11th in its division during state competition.

The state competition was at Saginaw State Valley University from Thursday, April 13, to Saturday, April 15.

Next stop for the Hybird Hornets is the Advanced World FIRST Championship in St. Louis from Wednesday, April 26, to Saturday, April 29.

Senior Dylan McIntire is excited to be going to the world competition in his last year of high school.

“It feels amazing,” McIntire said. “My four years of work have paid off.”

Sophomore Braden Schott is also excited to attend the competition after the team went for the first time last year.

“This is two years in a row,” Schott said. “It’s going to be lit. I feel like my dedication has paid off.”

The Hybrid Hornets won seven matches and lost five in the qualifying rounds.

In the quarterfinals, the team was captain of the 7th-seeded alliance. The Hybrid Hornets’ alliance beat the 2nd-seeded alliance 2-1 to move on to the semifinals.

However, the team was swept in its semifinal, losing both matches.

Cameron Gohs, freshman, gives credit to the older members of the team.

“We relied on our experienced members,” Gohs said.
