Kearsley will soon begin late-start Wednesdays

After much consideration, the Kearsley Board of Education has decided to give students at the high school a late-start Wednesday, starting with the third marking period.

For the past few years, Kearsley has observed schools that have a late start Wednesday, like Davison and Swartz Creek, to observe the effect it has on its students and their performance in school.

“We just saw remarkable changes in their performance,” Assistant Principal Matt Moore said. “Student’s grades soared high and they (the students) said they felt better coming to school since they had time to sleep and eat breakfast.”

It makes me so happy. I got time to do my stuff in the morning, like sleep, and I can eat more food when I get up.

Starting Wednesday, April 19, school will start at 11:15 a.m. and end at 2:20 p.m. like a normal school day.

Senior Carson Robinson is happy that late-start Wednesdays are becoming a thing at Kearsley.

“It makes me so happy,” Robinson said. “I got time to do my stuff in the morning, like sleep, and I can eat more food when I get up.”

Senior Michael Parker is also for the late start.

“When I come to school, I am super tired. I just want to spend an extra hour or two in bed,” Parker said. “But I have to get up early to get ready for the day. With this new late start, I get more sleep for sure.”

Some people are against the late start, however.

Mr. Rob Markwardt feels that a late-start Wednesday will screw up his classes too much.

“I absolutely love having my kids in first hour fall asleep during my lessons,” Markwardt said. “If they start getting up later, that means they’ll be more alert when they come to school, and they will be too energetic.”

The schedule for the 2017-2018 school calendar will also include late-start Wednesdays.

It is expected that Kearsley students will start doing better after a period of time so they can earn more money for the school through better scores on standardized tests.
