Five girls share their favorite things about school

Many students complain about school, but they have to like something about it.

They have to have a favorite teacher, a favorite class, and favorite extracurricular activity, right?

In this story, five students share three of their favorite things about school.

Favorite High School Teacher

“My favorite teacher is Mr. (Mike) Simms,” DePottey said. “I did not used to like science, but ever since I have been in his class, I like learning about science.”

Favorite Class

“My favorite class is health with Mrs. (Amy) Graham. She is funny and easy to relate to,” DePottey said.

Favorite Extracurricular Activity

“My favorite extracurricular activity is volleyball. I love playing sports and volleyball is the most fun for me,” Depottey said. “It teaches teamwork and makes you work hard.”

DePottey is a funny and laid-back student that is enjoying her first year of high school.

Favorite High School Teacher

“My favorite teacher is Mrs. (Courtney) Cox,” Miller said. “She teaches my biology class and is very welcoming. She loves to teach but can be funny and sarcastic, too.”

Favorite Class

“My favorite class is gym,” Miller said. “It is fun and gets you active. I know that if I come in sleepy, that class can always wake me up and give me energy.”

Favorite Extracurricular Activity

When asked about her favorite extracurricular activity, Miller could not contain her excitement.

“Bowling!” Miller said. “I have loved to bowl ever since I was in second grade. When I bowl, I can forget everything — all of my problems, all of my worries — and only focus on what I love: bowling.”

Miller is bowling for her second year on the KHS bowling team.

Favorite High School Teacher

“Senora (Lisa) Byrne is my favorite teacher because she was my first high school teacher,” Baltosser said. “I knew her before starting high school, since I took Spanish my eighth-grade year, and she taught it.

“She made class fun and entertaining. There was never a dull moment in her class. She was always willing to help me whenever I had a question.”

Favorite Class

Upon getting asked what her favorite class was, Baltosser did not hesitate to say art.

“My favorite class was art because I always enjoyed drawing and painting but never really knew how much I liked it until I took the class,” she said. “It taught me a lot.”

Favorite Extracurricular Activity

At the mention of extracurricular activity, Baltosser’s eyes lighted up with excitement.

“Cheerleading!” Baltosser said. “I have been doing cheer basically my whole life. I am now finishing my third year on the varsity cheer team and love it.”

Baltosser is a lifelong Kearsley student and cheerleading devotee.

Favorite High School Teacher

“Mr. (Scott) Lints is my favorite teacher,” Flynn said. “This is my first year I had him as a teacher. He is cool and funny and makes class fun every day.

“He makes the best out of every day, which is inspiring.”

Favorite Class

“My favorite class is Human Anatomy and Physiology. I like to learn about the human body,” Flynn said. “I feel like HAP is one of the only classes that actually prepares me for college because I plan on going into the medical field.”

Favorite Extracurricular Activity

Flynn had trouble deciding what her favorite extracurricular activity is, but eventually she decided that track and field is her favorite.

“Though I love dance and volleyball, running track is my favorite extracurricular,” Flynn said. “Coach (John) Hall is awesome, the girls on the team are amazing, and meeting new people is cool. Track is different (from any other sport) because we will have track meets for hours, but each athlete will only run for maybe 20 seconds.”

Flynn plays three varsity sports and enjoys being a social butterfly.

Hightower is not only a dedicated athlete, she is a hardworking student, too.

Favorite High School Teacher

Hightower’s eyes lighted  up when asked about her favorite teacher.

“My favorite teacher would have to be Mrs. Kandy Cousins,” Hightower said. “She is extremely smart. I had her for classes for two years, and it is hard to come by a teacher who is passionate about what they teach and teach it well.”

Favorite Class

“My favorite class was Human Anatomy and Physiology. I feel like I learned a lot from the class and will take what I learned with me to college,” Hightower said.

Favorite Extracurricular Activity

Hightower’s favorite extracurricular activity is her passion: running track.

“By far, my favorite extracurricular activity is track and field,” Hightower said. “Besides the running, the coach and team are amazing. Coach John Hall is such an encouraging track couch and the girls on the team really support each other to keep going. Track meets are so fun.”

Hightower is an interesting and well-rounded student who enjoys learning new things.
