Senior year is filled with applications for college, filling out FAFSA, and even applying for scholarships.

It can be hard to decide which scholarships to apply for, but in the case of senior Lindsay Nofs, no application was needed.

Nofs was a nominee at the 21st Annual Children’s Champion Awards Breakfast, held at the Riverfront Banquet Center on Friday, Feb. 5.

Specifically, Nofs was nominated for the Robert E. Weiss Outstanding Youth Award, which is aimed toward those who better the lives of children in Genesee County.

For this award, one individual won it while two others received scholarships.

Nofs was chosen by school officials to be nominated for this award from all of her service hours involved with children.

Mr. Craig Golembiewski, guidance councilor, believes that Nofs was worthy of the award.

Golembiewski said a KHS committee reviewed the Senior Class’ service learning hours, looking for students who “seemed to best meet the criteria of volunteering in activities that impact and make a difference in the lives of Genesee County children.”

After the review, the committee selected Nofs to represent Kearsley High School.

“Since I am Lindsay’s counselor, I met with her to further discuss her volunteer experiences, and my interview with her only confirmed that she is a worthy representative of KHS for the Robert E. Weiss Outstanding Youth Award,” Golembiewski said.

There were a lot of people that did a lot of amazing stuff there. It was a very humbling experience.

With 70 nominees for the Robert E. Weiss Outstanding Youth Award, Nofs believed the competition was tough.

In addition, there were five other types of awards given out with over 100 students competing for one of the six awards.

“There were a lot of people that did a lot of amazing stuff there,” Nofs said. “It was a very humbling experience.”

Nofs attended the breakfast with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Steve and Dawn Nofs.

After breakfast, Ms. Cindy Gansen, executive director, gave the opening speech.

After a few more speeches were given, including one by Ms. Angie Hendershot, who is from WJRT’s ABC 12 news, the award winners were announced.

Each award participant also gave a short speech.

Although Nofs did not ultimately win the award or scholarship, she was happy with the experience.

“It was an amazing experience,” Nofs said. “Knowing there are so many people that want to have a positive impact on Genesee County makes me believe that Flint will make a comeback from the negativity that it has been getting.”
