March 9th kicked off the beginning of spring sports. One of the returning sports is Girls Varsity and Junior Varsity Tennis. This year, Varsity Tennis is coached by Kearlsey High School teacher, Mr. Fisher. While JV Tennis is being coached by Molly Gunn. Varsity Tennis consists of 12 girls, 4 singles players and 8 doubles players.
Senior, Raquel Murphy has played tennis all 4 years of high school and has played both singles and doubles. When asked which she prefers, Murphy said, “I like to play both. But I prefer singles, because I feel like I have more control on the court and over the ball itself.”

This year, sophomore Olivia Link decided to join tennis, “I decided to play tennis because I just wanted to try something new and tennis seems really fun. And all of the girls are really nice!”
Link is currently a doubles 3 player with Junior, Taybor Soper. Returning player Soper stated, “ I’m most excited about being able to play with my friends.”

Junior, Miranda Russell is the Singles 1 player. Last year Russell was the Singles 4 Regional Champion and is very excited to continue improving this year. “I’m most excited to take on the responsibility of playing Singles 1 on varsity, continue improving with every match, and create new memories with my team.”
This year will be Dynamic Duo, Doubles 1 players Sophomore Ruby Chambers and Senior Grace Loessel’s second year playing together. They have created many memories and wins together. When asking Loessel and Chambers what their favorite memories are, Grace replied with, “When last year, Ruby and I won a match from a point where Ruby dove and fell on the ground!” Chambers was asked the same question and she replied, “ When I fell at our Lapeer Quad!”
Taylor Walters, Junior, is the team’s Singles 2 player. She is a very hard worker and enjoys playing tennis. Walters was asked what the hardest part about tennis was and she responded, “ For me I would say balancing the mental factors and internal pressure. I know that I can perform and when I am not meeting my own expectations, keeping calm and a positive mindset can be challenging because you do worse when you are upset and you are going to blow your match if you can’t reset.”
Good luck to the girls tennis team, as well as the other spring sports!
