Kearsley fell to St. Johns on Wednesday, Feb. 13, in the regional semifinal.

The wrestling team finished its season after losing to St. John’s 54-27 in the MHSAA Division 2 regional semifinal at Gaylord on Wednesday, Feb. 13.

Junior John Brown was happy with the team’s season.

“I’m proud of my team. It takes a lot of heart to stick through a whole season, and I’m thankful for us making it as far as we did,” Brown said. “The loss means nothing to me.”

Junior Trenton DiGenova said the team gave all it could with the small amount of wrestlers this year.

“We had less wrestlers than every team, so we gave up more points,” DiGenova said. “But we still practiced hard and had committed wrestlers show up everyday.”

DiGenova is hopeful for the team’s future.

“We have a solid freshman class coming up next year,” DiGenova said.

Coach Steven Bauer was happy with the matches at the regional.

“They wrestled well,” Bauer said. “(The team) just could not overcome the voids in the lineup.”

Bauer was also impressed with the overall season.

“Up to this point, our season has been full of ups and downs. We started 11-2 before the injury bug hit us,” Bauer said.

After several wrestlers sustained injuries, Bauer said the Hornets “stumbled” through the end of league competition.
