The Hornets’ wrestling team, currently ranked No. 7 in the state, defeated Flushing 45-30 in the final round on Feb. 11 to win an MHSAA District Tournament.

This is the 10th district title the Hornets have claimed in the last 15 years.

Seven Kearsley wrestlers won in the championship match. They were senior Jakob Chapman, juniors Jake Elizondo and Travis Wildfong, sophomores Zach Elizondo, Dylan Tarrence and Malik Davis, and freshman Andrew Ruhstorfer.

Senior James Davis, an All-State wrestler who did not compete at the district tournament, said the team needs to stay focused.

“It feels really good to win districts because we did it as a team, which I really like being a part of,” Davis said. “I’m going to focus and train really hard and keep the team focused to reach our goal of wining team regionals.”

Freshman Malik Davis enjoyed sharing the experience of winning a championship with his older brother, James.

“It was really exciting wining districts,” Malik Davis said. “But we have to keep pushing because we are not done until we make it to states.”
