Human Rights Day is celebrated on Sunday, Dec. 10, as the atrocities of World War II are remembered and honored.

Freshman Kaylee DeBlouw believes this national holiday is important to honor our rights.

“Human rights day is an important day to celebrate because we should be thankful for all of the rights we have that others don’t,” DeBlouw said.

DeBlouw believes it’s a privilege to have the rights and liberties we do today.

“The fact that people in other parts of the can’t have their own opinions (is an example of our freedom in America). Even though some rights we have are violated, we should still be joyous on this day for the rights that we do have,” DeBlouw said.

Human rights day began in 1948 when the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Freshman April Whitworth cares about human rights for all people.

“Human rights are important. They are what makes America what it is today,” Whitworth said. “We need to be more grateful because not all countries have as many rights as us Americans do.”

Human Rights Day of 2017 is the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This holiday is to celebrate when people finally gained equality in the form of rights.
