Golf loses to Holly by tie-breaker

The golf team lost to Holly 169-169 via tie-breaker at the Hornets’ second match of the season on Tuesday, April 19.

Due to the tie, league bylaws settle the match by using the fifth best score.

Since the Bronchos’ Noah Rooker’s score of 44 bested that of Kearsley’s fifth best score, Holly earned the win.

Junior Connor VanSteenburg led Kearsley with 41 strokes.

Senior Tyler Phipps and sophomore Jack Vollmar followed close behind Vansteenburg, each with 42 strokes.

Vollmar did not start off how he wanted but did better as the game progressed.

“I started off with two double-bogeys, and then as the match continued I picked up my game and had some pars,” Vollmar said.

Even with the loss, Vollmar believes he and his team played well.

“We did have a player out, so that did not help us,” Vollmar said. “Once our key players start playing as good as I know they can, I believe we can make it far into the Metro (League).”

The two teams will meet again at the Metro League Post-Season Tournament.

Kearsley’s next match is at Owosso on Friday, April 22.
