Senior Evan Flood led the golf team in its victory over Lapeer on May 14.

The Hornets narrowly beat Lapeer 172-174 on May 14.

The winner of the Kearsley-Lapeer rivalry is rewarded with a trophy called the Hickory Stick.

Mr. Andy Nester, golf coach, was happy to defend the Hickory Stick.

“There’s been a long-standing rivalry between Lapeer and Kearsley, so we play for what’s called the Hickory Stick,” Nester said. “It’s an antique golf club with a wooden shaft in it. We retained it last night.”

Senior Evan Flood golfed well for Kearsley, shooting a match-low 41.

Junior Brian Sams and sophomore Connor Vansteenburg followed closely, with 43 and 44 strokes, respectively.

Lapeer Lightning’s Eric McFeary shot well for his team with a 42.

Flood was recently named to the Flint Metro All-League team, garnering first team accolades.

Sams was named second team, All-League, while junior Tyler Phipps was recognized with an honorable mention.

“All-league is determined by a pre- and a post-18-hole tournament,” Nester said. “The boys averaged in such a way that ranked them on first team for Evan and second team for Brian. Any time a player is named to first or second team All-League is an honor that the player and the coach feels is a reward of hard work.”
