Boys’ track takes third at Midland, five girls’ relays medaled

The boys’ track and field team finished third and the girls were last at Midland in the Graves/Swayze Relays on April 24.

There were no individual races at this meet, solely relays.

In the boys’ meet, Midland won with 113 points, Flushing was second with 97, and Kearsley finished third with 83 points, beating out Alpena (56), Traverse City West (47), and Midland Dow (38).

Junior Jonathan McKay, senior Anton Webster, sophomore Darrion Younger, and senior Trevor Gehrig won the 3200-meter relay with a time of 8:17.60 and the 1600 relay with a time of 3:31.80.

Another first place came in the 800 relay from McKay, Younger, junior Deitrick Young, and junior Matt Parkinson in the 800 relay in 1:33.30.

Coach Paul Adas selected three honorable mention recipients from the meet for his team: Younger for the most outstanding performer, the 3200 relay team for the most outstanding runners, and senior Jaylen Shock for the most outstanding field event in shot put.

Medals were awarded to the top four finishers in each event.

In the girls’ meet, host Midland claimed the title with 106 points, Flushing and Alpena tied as runners up with 60 points apiece, followed by Swartz Creek (46), Midland Dow (36) and Kearsley (16).

The girls had five relay teams place fourth at the meet.

Topping the night with three medals apiece were junior Haley Flynn and sophomore Ave’r McKay.

Three athletes finished the night with two medals apiece: senior Jackie Hainer, junior Miranda Lumetta and freshman Kaylee Hill.

The track teams will compete on April 29 at Swartz Creek in a double-dual meet with Brandon and May 1 at the Goodrich Invitational.
