Memorial Day is celebrated on Monday, May 28.

Memorial Day, also known as Decoration Day, is a holiday the United States uses to remember those who have lost their lives fighting for our country and those who have been lost and are prisoners of war.

Some also use Memorial Day as a day to remember those we still have fighting, as they are still just as important.

Freshman Sierra Jones celebrates Memorial Day with her dad every year, remembering others who are still fighting for our country. She remembers the days her dad was in the Navy and is thankful he came home.

“My dad was in the Navy and was stationed in San Diego, Calif.; Adak, Alaska; and Alameda, Calif.,” Jones said.

Jones said her dad served until 2008.

Jones and her brothers were raised by their mother, and she is thankful her dad is home now.

“I was very young when my dad left, and I didn’t understand,” Jones said. “My mom raised us and we love her so much, but we are glad that our dad came home.”

Freshman Jonah Walker celebrates Memorial Day with his family, thankful that his family that served came home.

“My grandpa and Uncle Dan served in the Navy, and they were both out of the service before I can remember them,” Walker said. “My brother Micah served in the Navy and was stationed in San Diego, Calif.”

Walker missed his brother while he was away.

“Micah left when I was 9, and it was so hard being away from him,” Walker said. “Micah and I were so close, and I am so happy he is home now.”

Senior Rebekah Caudle celebrates Memorial Day with her family as they honor her cousin Alyssa who is still serving in the Navy in North Carolina.

“My family and I have a cookout and set off small fireworks to remember those who fought and who are still fighting,” Caudle said. “We all miss Alyssa while she is away and celebrate her on Memorial Day.”
