The Hybrid Hornets robot, 5150, reaches up to place a power cube into the scale during a competition.

The Hybrid Hornets, Kearsley’s robotics team, competed at Mason on Thursday, March 22, and Friday, March 23, against other Michigan teams.

After playing 12 qualification matches, the Hornets placed ninth out of 40 other teams.

The Hybrid Hornets then went on to win their quarterfinal round and were finally stopped in the semifinal.

Junior Chinyari Miles is on the team and is proud of how far they went, even if the team didn’t make it to the final.

“I love it all,” Miles said.

In the next two weeks, other teams will go head-to-head to find their ranking in the Michigan.

Once the two weeks are up, the Hornets will know if they have the opportunity to go to the states competition at Saginaw Valley State University.

Miles hopes the team can continue to compete.

“We had really good fun, and I hope it doesn’t end there,” Miles said.
