Watch the Winter Olympics from a new angle

With only a few more days left, viewers can tune into the 2018 Winter Olympics in a new way, ending Sunday, Feb. 25.

The Olympics are being filmed for the first time in Virtual Reality by NBC.

VR is a way of filming or a simulated world that allows the viewer to look around the filmed or augmented environment in 360 degrees.

The use of VR technology, mostly used through video games and other forms of entertainment, has risen in the past few years.

According to Lifewire, “Virtual reality is the name coined for any system that aims to allow a user to feel as if they’re experiencing a particular experience through the use of special perception-changing tools.”

NBC will allow viewers to tune into the events in VR through Oculus, Gear VR, Google Daydream, Windows Mixed Reality, and Google Cardboard.

Viewers that are unable to obtain a VR headset can still view the events on the NBC Sports VR app.

The events that can be viewed in VR will be alpine skiing, curling, snowboard half-pipe, figure skating, skeleton, short track, ski jumping, big air, and ice hockey.

Events filmed will be posted once the event takes place.

A more detailed schedule of events being filmed can be found on the NBC Olympics website.

The app allows its viewers to see the events from the U.S. team at a delay, often posted to the website and app after the events take place.

Senior Grace Hoffman said she would be more interested if the app ran more smoothly.

“I think until they work out the kinks and show more than just the U.S. team it would be more interesting,” Hoffman said.

Senior Barbara Hawes said the new way of viewing the Olympics is intriguing but a slight let down with the lag in time.

“I think if it was in real time it would be more interesting,” Hawes said. “You have to go through a lot just to view it.”

In short, it will be interesting to see the 2018 Winter Olympics from a new angle and with advancing technology the experience will only improve for future viewers.
