If passed, bill will ban driving with dogs on drivers’ laps
In late November, Michigan state Rep. LaTanya Garrett, D-Detroit, proposed a bill to prevent drivers from driving with dogs on their laps.
If violated, drivers would be fined $100 for the first offense and any offense afterword would be $200.
Currently, there are no laws in Michigan that require a normal dog to be restrained in any way during a ride in a vehicle.
This bill would be the first restraint on transporting dogs in cars in Michigan.
The bill is currently still being debated in the state Legislature.
Sophomore Brooke McCulley is a new driver and frequently drives with her pet on her lap.
“I won’t be able to drive with Kirby (her dog) on my lap anymore,” McCulley said.
Although the bill will change things for her, McCulley said it’s for the best.
“He always messes me up when I drive,” McCulley said. “It’ll be good for me and others.”
Junior Chinyrai Miles has mixed feelings about the bill.
“I feel that it’s OK for some dogs to be on your lap,” Miles said, “but there is a limit.”
Right now, this bill doesn’t affect her, but she said that it could in the future.
“I want to get a dog later,” Miles said. “It’ll affect me then.”
