Prom isn’t worth the expense

Prom is extremely expensive, just a night with friends in a fancy venue. You rent limos, go to dinner, and buy or rent a dress or tuxedo.

But is it really worth the money?

They say it’s supposed to be a magical night filled with fun and music. But, really, everyone just gets excited for another school dance.

Everyone gets hyped up for nothing.

There are still parties, the same songs, and the exhaustion you experience the next day.

The only problem is that people spend way too much for something they’ve done almost every year of high school.

The amounts of money that people pay for prom actually irks me.

Girls have nails to be painted, hair to be styled, and makeup to be done.

On top of that, they probably want a cute clutch or purse, shoes, earrings, necklaces, and bracelets.

The average prom dress price is $100-$400. Some places can charge up to $1,000 for a prom dress; many wedding dresses don’t even cost that much.

Who wants to spend that much on a dress you’re going to wear once, maybe twice.

As for the guys? The average price for a tuxedo rental is anywhere between $100-$150.

Guys are also expected to pay for dinner, which could be in a wide range of prices. However, most girls probably don’t want to go to a fast food restaurant so it may not be cheap.

Limos are costly, too. The average cost per hour for a limo rental is $130. Even splitting it up among a group of people could take a lot of money out of your pocket.

At some schools, students even do all of this twice.

Some schools have prom for the Junior Class and the Senior Class, and the students are willing to pay for all of these expenses twice.

Why not buy a second-hand dress and accessories? Do your own nails, hair, and makeup, too. Maybe even drive to the dance in your family car.

The money you spend on this so-called “magical night” could be used for anything under the sun.

You could be putting it into a savings account for college spending.

You’re going to need textbooks, clothes, dorm expenses, furniture, and even food. When you’re living on your own, what will you do? You can’t rely on your parents to pay for everything forever.

You’re going to be an adult in the real world, and that’s way different than the high school world you live in now.

Even if you don’t go to college, you still need money to live on. You probably want to move out of your parents’ house, so of course you’ll need to pay rent to an apartment complex or a landlord.

Don’t get me wrong, I do think that you should go to prom — it’s your last dance! You should go and bask in your glory years while you can because they won’t be like this for much longer.

I just don’t believe that we, as teenagers, should pay for or make our parents pay so much for something that is so ordinary.
