Blond wins Metro League Singles Tournament, Hawes is runner-up

The girls bowling team ended up with six members earning All-League honors, while freshman Imari Blond (center) won the league’s singles tournament.

Freshman Imari Blond won the Metro League Singles Tournament and made first team All-League along with two other Hornets.

Junior Barbara Hawes and sophomore Alexis Roof joined Blond as members of the All-League team.

Blond won the tournament, which was Saturday, Feb. 18, at Richfield Bowl, after defeating her teammate, Hawes, in the final 257-248. Hawes finished as runner-up.

Early in the tournament, junior Barbara Hawes led the league in the qualifying rounds with a 666 in a three-game series. Sophomore Alexis Roof was just behind with a 664 series.

Juniors Karlee Griffin and Emma Boychuk also qualified along with freshman Samantha Timm and Blond.

Four Hornets advanced to the first round. By the second round, three members advanced, including Blond, Hawes, and Roof.

In the second round, Blond defeated Roof 202-184, while Hawes defeated a member of Flushing’s team 256-213.

In the final, Blond beat Hawes, giving Blond the singles championship.

Although Hawes finished runner-up, she set a career high in her first three games of the final with games of 209, 227, and 265 for a 695 series.

Besides Blond, Hawes, and Roof earning All-League honors, two Hornets made the second team: Boychuk and Griffin.

In addition, sophomore Mary Wheeler got an honorable mentionĀ and Coach Rob Ploof was named coach of the year for the Metro League.

The Hornets show up next at Mason City Limits Bowling Center on Friday, Feb. 24, at noon for the MHSAA regional.
