The wrestling team took first place at the Metro League tournament Saturday, Feb. 4, at Flushing Middle School. The tournament victory also clinched the overall league championship for the Hornets.

The wrestling team won its second consecutive Flint Metro League wrestling championship Saturday, Feb. 4, at Flushing Middle School after finishing the season undefeated and winning the tournament with the help of four individual champions.

Senior Zachary Elizondo won the 119-pound weight class over Swartz Creek’s Brecken Griwatsch. Elizondo’s record is now 27-5.

Elizondo was pleased with the tournament results but is also sad because it was his final league competition.

“It is bittersweet knowing this is my last year wrestling for Kearsley,” Elizondo said. “Our team ended the tournament on a good note by finishing first in the (dual schedule) and taking the league title.

“I was able to earn first team All-League with some of my closets teammates. I am looking forward to districts and hopefully continuing our season.”

At 285 pounds, senior Marcus Moss ran his mark to 24-15 with a 3-1 win over Holly’s Blake Querio.

Senior Dylan Tarrence (l to r), junior Malik Davis, senior Marcus Moss, and senior Zachary Elizondo won their individual weight class at the Flint Metro League championship on Saturday, Feb. 4, at Flushing Middle School.

Moss said he and the team accomplished an important goal.

“I’m so proud of myself and my team for doing so well,” Moss said. “I hope we can continue this success.”

Kearsley’s third senior to claim an individual title was Dylan Tarrence, who improved to 38-1 overall.

Tarrence won the 160-pound weight class with a 3-2 decision over Swartz Creek’s J.T. Mullins.

Finally, junior Malik Davis beat Brandon’s Brady Hendershott 7-4. Davis is now 29-3.

Davis said his individual title and the team’s title were a result of sweat and determination.

“I pushed myself all season to place at Metro Leagues since I didn’t place last season,” Davis said, “and the hard work paid off when I took first.

I had some doubts with being on a younger team, but we did big things this year and no one expected it.

— Malik Davis, senior

“I had some doubts with being on a younger team, but we did big things this year and no one expected it. Now we have to keep working to make it to team states and for future seasons.”

Last time the wrestling program won back-to-back league titles was 1991-1992.

Coach Luther Brown was named league Coach of the Year for the third straight season.

The Hornets compete next on Wednesday, Feb. 8, as the team travels to St. Johns for district competition,

On Saturday, Feb. 11, Kearsley’s individual district will be held at Gaylord.
