Freshmen will be able to take a new AP class next year

KHS will be starting Advanced Placement U.S. History next school year.

Mr. Robert Markwardt will teach the course. Currently he teaches AP World History.

Markwardt believes that honors classes do not challenge Kearsley’s top students. Therefore, he wanted to create an AP class for the upcoming freshmen.

“I wanted to start an AP U.S. History course because I believe honors history has not been challenging enough for our top students,” Markwardt said. “Because AP classes are rigorous and demanding, they offer an intellectual challenge that students won’t get in regular courses.”

Sophomore Chloe Clark believes creating this class is a great opportunity for the upcoming freshmen.

“Markwardt realizes how important AP is,” Clark said. “It’s a struggle going from honors to AP.”

Markwardt believes AP U.S. history will improve the students’ comprehension and writing ability.

“Incoming freshmen will definitely be challenged by a college-based curriculum that will benefit the strongest students, making them stronger across all subjects,” Markwardt said. “Their writing will be greatly improved as well as their study skills and test-taking abilities.”

Clark wishes she would’ve been given the opportunity to take this class her freshman year and had the opportunity to earn a college credit through an AP test.

“It would’ve been another college class I wouldn’t have to take later on,” Clark said. “It also would’ve helped my GPA.”
