Jonathan and Ave’r McKay both qualified for the Division 1 track state final meet.

Brother and sister tandem Jonathan and Ave’r McKay qualified for the state track meet at a Division 1 regional meet on Friday, May 20, at Davison High School.

Junior Ave’r McKay qualified for the state meet in her 400-meter run. She placed second with a time of 1:01.40.

Ave’r just missed qualifying for the state final in the 100 and 200, by taking third place in each event.  Only the top two spots automatically qualify.

Ave’r sprinted her 100 in 13.07, and she ran the 200 in 26.99.

Older brother Jonathan McKay, senior, also qualified in the 400, placing second with a time of 50.04.

This will be Jonathan’s second year traveling to the state final. He and his sister are looking forward to representing Kearsley at the biggest meet of the year.

The state final is Saturday, June 4, in Hudsonville. The track is not at the high school, though. It is at the Baldwin Middle School Athletic Complex, located at 3835 Baldwin Street in Hudsonville.

Other scorers for the Hornets were two relay teams and senior Matt Parkinson in two events.

The 800-relay team placed third with a time of 1:31.69. The team included Tre’Ron Griffin, Taveon Harris, Parkinson, and McKay.

The 1600 relay, consisting of Griffin, Dakotah Doman, Harris, and McKay, placed seventh with a time of 3:33.21.

In the 300 hurdles, Parkinson placed fifth, running his race in 41.27.

Parkinson also scored in the 100 dash. He placed eighth with a time of 11.62.

The Hornets’ next meet is the Metro League Championship, Wednesday, May 25, at Linden.
