Six wrestlers advance to individual finals
After competing in the individual regional, six Kearsley wrestlers qualified for the individual state final.
The Hornets sent nine wrestlers to compete at the MHSAA Division 2 individual regional at Imlay City on Saturday, Feb. 20.
Three Hornets finished as runners-up.
In the 103-pound weight class, sophomore Andrew Ruhstorfer lost to champion Caleb Teague of Goodrich after pinning Nathan Harville in 1:48 of the semifinal. Harville is also from Goodrich.
Sophomore Malik Davis also placed second, losing to Linden’s Dawson Blank, at 145 pounds. In the semifinal, Davis won 12-1, defeating Yale’s Jeff Schutt.
Kearsley’s final runner-up was junior Dylan Tarrence in the 160 division. Tarrence fell to Clio’s Chase Smith 5-0 in the championship after beating Brady Bischer of Yale.
Three other wrestlers will also move on to the finals.
Senior Coi Jenkins placed third in the 125 weight class after pinning Armada’s Robert Nowik in 4:30.
In the 140 division, senior Travis Wildfong defeated Brady Schulz, from Gaylord, 4-1 to place third.
Junior Zach Elizondo placed fourth after falling in the consolation final to Owosso’s Emilio Campos 13-7 at 112 pounds.
All of these wrestlers will compete in the individual finals March 3-5 at The Palace of Auburn Hills.
