Wrestlers lose regional title to Gaylord
Gaylord once again has ruined the season for Kearsley wrestling.
The Hornets lost their bid to return to the quarterfinals in an MHSAA Division 2 regional meet Wednesday, Feb. 17, at Mt. Pleasant after the Blue Devils knocked them out of the tournament for the second year in a row.
Gaylord defeated Kearsley by four points last February in a quarterfinal match in Battle Creek.
The regional started well for Kearsley, which was ranked No. 9 in the state. The Hornets defeated Owosso 58-15 in the semifinal.
In the other semifinal, No. 4 ranked Gaylord defeated Escanaba 48-26.
Kearsley and Gaylord then faced off for the championship in a battle of top-10 teams.
The Blue Devils beat Kearsley 33-27.
Even though the team’s season is over, the Hornets have 10 wrestlers still competing in the individual state tournament.
Kearsley’s individual regional is Saturday, Feb. 20, at Imlay City.
