A different resolution: I’m going to take better care of myself in 2016

Can you remember the last time you stuck with a New Year’s resolution?

It is OK if you don’t. Why? Because you are human.

We create resolutions Dec. 31, swearing to stand by our words and to actually carry out the task, whatever it may be.

Jan. 1 is the same every year — a goal-oriented day, a true, fresh, and clean start for your new year.

The resolutions made every year range from starting gym memberships to rekindling broken friendships and everything in between.

Regardless of the complexity, we are all guilty of giving up on our resolutions. By the time Feb. 1 rolls around, we become completely lost in our lives to remember our “new beginnings” goal.

Our resolutions are abandoned and forgotten; started but never finished. What we were once confident in doing becomes misplaced into the void of misplaced thoughts.

We comfort our forgetfulness with lies and excuses, such as blaming time.

So here I am, resolving your resolutions with mine.

Keep 2016 simple

My resolution this year is to keep it simple because all of the complex resolutions I have made before did not work for me.

I will love myself better in 2016

Not that it means I hated myself in 2015, but I want to be better.

I will take care of myself better.

I will be nicer to myself.

I will do things that make me happy.

I will forgive my own mistakes.

I will love the person I am.

We focus so much on loving everyone else (not that it is a terrible thing) that we tend to forget to love who matters the most, ourselves.

We forget to take care and do nice things for ourselves.

When you love yourself better, you love everyone around you better as well.

In 2016, do not resolve to go to the gym more, but do resolve to exercise, because it makes you feel good.

Do not resolve to watch calories, but do resolve to eat well and share meals with the people you love because that is more satisfying.

Do not resolve to get all A’s, but resolve to work your hardest in school because it makes you smarter.

Resolve to take better care of yourself, to love yourself, and to make 2016 a more lovable year.
