‘Joy’ is not so joyous

Luckily the movie “Joy” was named after the main character because the movie was only satisfying.

I give this movie two out of five stars.

Jennifer Lawrence is my favorite actress by far. However, if she did not have the lead role in “Joy,” I probably would not have seen it.

Lawrence acts amazingly, but the story bored me, probably because it was all about a woman trying to sell her mop.

The movie is based on the life of Joy Mangano, the woman who created the Miracle Mop.

Joy, played by Jennifer Lawrence, is a struggling, divorced mother who has the potential to do great things but just cannot seem to get it together long enough to do great things.

She has her mother living in the spare bedroom, her ex-husband living in her basement, and two young children to provide for.

Her grandmother, who always knew she would do great things, reminds her throughout the beginning of the movie that she was meant to be remarkable.

After mopping up a mess of broken glass and cutting her fingers, Joy gets the idea to make a mop that you can squeeze without using your hands.

Joy takes out multiple loans and even takes out a mortgage on her house to produce her mops, but trouble arises when the production of her mops and selling them becomes a challenge.

Actors Robert De Niro and Bradley Cooper also appear in the movie.

De Niro is Joy’s father, whose girlfriend gives Joy loans to start the production of her mop.

Cooper is a QVC executive who decides if Joy’s mop is good enough to sell on QVC.

The movie did have its selling points, making it watchable, but I do not recommend this movie that was released Dec. 25, 2015.

Sadly, the movie was not a joy.
