The blockbuster reigned supreme in 2015

At the end of the year, I like to reflect back on all of the great movies I saw. From cheesy Valentine’s Day flicks to action-packed summer movies, there have been some great movies that have come out of 2015 and are still worth a look if you have not seen them yet.

“American Sniper”

This movie came out all the way back in January. Premiering on Jan. 16, the movie smashed the box offices, making a total of $547.13 million worldwide during its run in theaters.

“American Sniper” tells the true story of Chris Kyle (Bradley Cooper), a Navy SEAL sniper. Kyle is said to be “the most lethal sniper in U.S. history” with a total number of 150 recorded kills.

This epic movie explores his life in the Navy and his service over in Afghanistan. However, it does not stop there. The movie shows the effects the war had on him and how he died.

This movie is action-packed and chilling because it is based on an incredible, true story.

“The DUFF”

“The DUFF” premiered in theaters Feb. 20 and was a hit with teens.

The movie focuses on the life of high school senior Bianca Piper (Mae Whitman) and her struggle to overcome labels. She enlists the help of Wesley (Robbie Amell) to ditch the DUFF (designated ugly fat friend) label and, ultimately, to gain self-confidence.

The movie is full of witty comments and hilarious scenarios.

“Cinderella”

Although this movie has been remade countless times, I believe that this is one of the better versions.

The movie, released on March 13, stars Lily James as Cinderella, Cate Blanchett as the stepmother, and Richard Madden as the Prince. What I really enjoyed about this movie was that it gave the viewer a different perspective of the stepmother. She seems more relatable, less evil.

Another aspect of this film that everyone can appreciate is the brilliant colors and wonderful backgrounds.

“The Divergent Series: Insurgent”

While this movie was not exactly like Veronica Roth’s book of the same name, it was still an action-packed, emotion-filled blockbuster hit of the year. I thoroughly enjoyed it and felt that the acting was magnificent.

Shailene Woodley as Tris Prior, Theo James as Four, Kate Winslet as Jeanine, and Ansel Elgort as Caleb Prior depict their characters with such emotion and realness that, for a second, viewers actually start to believe in the movie.

“Insurgent” is the sequel to “Divergent” and follows Tris and Four as they both try to defeat Jeanine and save the city. In the end, though, there is a twist that they never saw coming.

“Furious 7”

“Furious 7” could be on this list solely for its spectacular tribute to the late Paul Walker.

However, even without that, it is still a fantastic story with plenty of action and emotion.

In the movie Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) is being sought by Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) who seeks revenge for the death of his friend. Toretto and his crew must come up with a marvelous plot to evade Shaw and, eventually, get rid of him.

The movie ends with Toretto and Brian O’Connor (Walker) racing for the last time.

“The Avengers: Age of Ultron”

All comic-book lovers flooded to the theaters May 1 to see this hero-filled sequel to “The Avengers.”

The Avengers — Tony Stark/Ironman (Robert Downey Jr.), Bruce Banner/Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Steve Rogers/Captain America (Chris Evans), Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), and Clint Barton/Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) — assemble once again to fight a new threat, Ultron (Jame Spader).

Marvel created yet another summer blockbuster hit with this one and will again this year with “Captain America: Civil War.”

“Jurassic World”

This movie brought dinosaurs back to life in the latest movie in the Jurassic Park franchise. With better graphics and great actors, this movie makes an excellent addition to the beloved series.

Following suit with the previous movies, some dinosaurs escape and begin to wreak havoc on the guests and the employees of the newest theme park. Christ Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard star in this summer blockbuster.

Over the course of its run, the movie grossed over $1.5 billion worldwide.

The movie has intense action sequences and emotion, just as in the original movies.

“Bridge of Spies”

Though not as big of a hit with viewers as “Jurassic World,” this movie highlighted an important moment in U.S. history.

Tom Hanks stars in this intense drama as a lawyer who is called upon by the U.S. government to negotiate with the Soviet Union during the Cold War. With such high stakes, he has to decide who is the real enemy, whether that be a single man or his country.

This movie deals with personal morals and making judgments.

“The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2”

This finale in the global blockbuster series was released on Nov. 20 and has grossed over $372.9 million in theaters so far.

Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and her friends continue the fight against the Capitol in their dystopian world.

Moviegoers were saddened by the conclusion to the worldwide phenomenon, and flocked to theaters, sometimes multiple times, to see it.

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens”

A list of the best movies of 2015 could not be complete without the latest episode in the Star Wars franchise.

In the movie, Leia (Carrie Fisher) and Han Solo (Harrison Ford), along with newcomers Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Finn (John Boyega), are in search for Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) while simultaneously trying to destroy Starkiller Base.

Though it has only been in theaters for two and a half weeks, it has already smashed records.

The movie earned $49 million on Christmas Day, crushing the previous record set by “Avatar” ($23 million).

“The Force Awakens” has also set a record for biggest opening weekend with nationwide ticket sales of $247.9 million and is sure to break the record for highest grossing movie, now held by “Avatar” ($2.7 billion). It has already made $1.5 billion in its first three weeks.

Even though 2015 was a year of blockbusters and record breakers, 2016 is sure to be another year full of great movies.
