Cold weather leaves students unmotivated for school

What is the first thing you think of when someone says “winter”? The very last thing to pop into my head is homework; the first thing would be cold weather.

Cold weather does not motivate me to do my school work. I’d much rather curl up in a ball in my cozy bed and fall asleep.

But I am not the only one that feels this way. Junior Jennifer Delong agrees with this statement.

Delong said, “All I want to do when I get home is curl up and watch Netflix for five hours.”

Students find it hard to get up and get ready when the temperature outside is below zero.

No one I know wants to go outside and face the unpleasant wind chills at the break of dawn.

Lance Blight, junior, does not like how the cold weather always feels gloomy.

“I hate waking up so early in the morning,” Blight said. “It’s hard getting motivated when it’s always dark and dreary out.”

Due to the freezing cold weather outside, we have had multiple snow/ice days. In many of my classes we are playing catch up.

Branden Wade, junior, pointed out that it is harder for him to do his homework when we have a day off.

“They assign us homework, or a test to study for, then we get a day off,” Wade said, “then I just procrastinate on it until the last minute.”

Although cold weather can bring unpleasant wind chills and dreary feelings, it can also be fun and enjoyable to students on the snow/ice days.

Blight agrees that cold weather can be fun at times.

“Cold weather isn’t all that bad,” Blight said. “I love riding my snowmobile. I hate being stuck inside.”

Wade also thinks that cold weather can be enjoyable.

“I do like it (cold weather) if I want some snow to go snowboarding,” Wade said.

However, the enjoyable aspect of snow days does not change the fact that cold weather often makes people grouchy and cross.

Delong admitted that she gets short-tempered when it is extremely cold in the morning.

“The cold makes me feel more bitter than usual, and rather irritated,” Delong said, “especially if the bus ride is really cold.”

It will not be cold for too much longer, though, since the lows this week are supposed to hover around freezing.

Spring is right around the corner, so the warm weather should start approaching soon.
