‘The DUFF’ makes audiences crack up
“The DUFF,” which is based on the book by Kody Keplinger, premiered in theaters on Feb. 20.
I had read the book before seeing the movie and, to be honest, I was a little skeptical when I saw the trailers for the movie. It just looked so completely different from the book that I wasn’t too sure how I was going to like it.
However, I think anybody, book lover or not, will fall in love with this comedy. “The DUFF” is witty and fresh. It deals with modern social issues and new, creative labels for people.
The movie is about Bianca Piper (Mae Whitman) who finds out from a childhood friend, Wesley Rush (Robbie Amell), that she is the DUFF (Designated Ugly Fat Friend) to her two best friends. She is shocked by this news and makes a deal with him: she will tutor him in science if he helps her to un-duff herself.
I felt that the movie was put together well, despite the deviation from the book.
The way that characters were introduced to viewers was ingenious. The director set it up social-media style and described characters using comical hashtags and photos of the person.
Not even two minutes into the movie, I was already cracking up. It’s a sign of greatness when the whole theater is laughing at the very beginning.
The actors also did a wonderful job bringing the characters to life. They also dug into some deeper emotions and played those very sincerely as well.
Everything felt genuine, and what was supposed to be funny was.
A great plot, wonderful actors, and amazing screenwriters, as well as a brilliant director, made this movie a hit for me.
If you’re in the mood for comedy and a little romance, I definitely recommend this movie to you.
