Ten romantic movies you should watch for Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching and a classic date for this special day is a trip to the movie theater.

Hundreds of movies have been released centering on the idea of love. These movies — while having a similar theme — all have separate views and opinions of romance.

Movies for this holiday can be cynical or lovey-dovey. Either way, these movies can be very entertaining and heart-felt.

There are some movies that I believe everyone must watch this time of year.

“Sleepless in Seattle” (1993) is a classic movie to watch around Valentine’s Day.

There is love and adventure in this timeless movie.

The movie is about Sam Baldwin (Tom Hanks) and his son, Jonah (Ross Malinger), who have recently lost their wife/mother. Jonah calls a radio talk show to try and find love for his dad. Suzy (Rita Wilson) is listening to the talk show when Jonah calls in, and she falls in love with the idea of his dad, who is later put on the talk show by his son.

Needless to say, the movie is full of comedy, drama, and misadventure.

“The Notebook” (2004) is yet another classic for our generation, which is based on the acclaimed novel by Nicholas Sparks.

The story takes place in present day South Carolina at a retirement home.

Duke (James Garner) is reading a love story to a woman, Allie (Gena Rowlands), who has Alzheimer’s. The story he reads to her follows the tale of two young adults, Noah (Ryan Gosling) and Allie Calhoun (Rachel McAdams), who fall in love during a summer but are forced apart by social differences.

The story is full of love and humor, but also tragedy and loss, which is why this is a movie you should watch around Valentine’s Day.

“Titanic” (1997) is another great movie to watch, although if you’ve never seen it, be prepared and have tissues at the ready.

The movie tells the story of Rose (Kate Winslet) and Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio), who are passengers on the maiden (and only) voyage of the R.M.S. Titanic.

Rose is a society girl who is engaged to a man, Caledon ‘Cal’ Hockley (Billy Zane), who she does not love. She feels depressed about her whole situation until she meets Jack, who introduces her to a whole different world. They, of course, fall in love and face the obstacle of social division and of course the fate of the Titanic.

“A Walk to Remember” (2002) is another movie based on a book by the acclaimed romance novelist, Nicholas Sparks.

In this movie, Landon (Adam West) and Jamie (Mandy Moore) are two seniors who, seemingly, could not be more different.

However, when Landon is forced to do community service and be a part of the school play, they discover that they are not so different after all.

Full of love and tragedy, this is definitely a must-watch on Valentine’s Day.

“A Lot Like Love” (2005) is a quirky addition to this list of love stories.

The movie follows the lives of two people, Emily (Amanda Peet) and Oliver (Ashton Kutcher), who meet at random. Over the course of seven years, they keep bumping into each other.

The movie is a funny, indie take on love and how two perfect strangers can find it.

“What Happens in Vegas” (2008) may be the funniest on this list of romance movies.

The movie tells the story of Joy (Cameron Diaz) and Jack (Ashton Kutcher), who after a night of drinking in Vegas, get married. They go to a judge after realizing their mistake and he orders them to act as a real couple for a set amount of time, if they want to get the annulment.

As you can probably predict, they do not get along and there is a ton of comedy when these two opposites try living together.

So far on this list we’ve seen happy endings and sad endings. However, this next one has an ending that is, to say the least, surprising. “500 Days of Summer” (2009) is a refreshing romantic comedy where you actually can’t predict the ending.

In the movie, Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is searching for the perfect girl, and when he sees a co-worker, Summer (Zooey Deschanel), for the first time,he believes he’s found it. He courts her, and, let me just say, she is not easy to get.

“50 First Dates” (2004) is probably the most out-there on this list.

The movie tells the story of Henry (Adam Sandler) meeting Lucy (Drew Barrymore), and they hit it off over breakfast.

However, as can be expected, they don’t just ride off into the sunset after that because the next day when he goes to see her she can’t even remember him. Lucy has a protective father (Blake Clark) and brother (Sean Astin) who will make it very hard for Henry to try and make her remember him.

The next movie is one of my all-time favorite: “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” (2003).

Andie Anderson (Kate Hudson) gets assigned a job to write an article on how to lose a guy in 10 days (hence the title), and she thinks she has it all worked out, that is until she falls in love with Ben Barry (Matthew McConaughey), the man she’s supposed to make break up with her. Ben, too, has an agenda in order to move up in the workplace.

A top-notch cast and a great plot line make this movie a hit.

The last movie on my list has surely earned its place here among romantic movies, especially when dealing with Valentine’s Day. You guessed it! The last one on my list is the star-filled movie, “Valentine’s Day” (2010).

The movie shows how Valentine’s Day can affect a myriad of interconnected couples.

The movie stars a number of mega-stars, including Jessica Alba, Bradley Cooper, Taylor Swift, and Patrick Dempsey.

I found the movie both hilarious and heart-felt and would definitely recommend it to everybody.

Whether or not you choose to watch any of the movies I suggested, I hope you have a great Valentine’s Day.
