An open letter to my grandpa with cancer: Never stop fighting

My loving Papa,

I have loved you since the day I was born when you held me for the first time.

We have always had a great grandparent-grandchild friendship, and I wouldn’t change it for the world.

Our countless trips with Grammy to the marina to stay on the boat are memories that will never fade. As are the many times all of us grandkids gathered at your house having the time of our lives spending time with family.

You and Grammy have held the family together and have been an inspiration to all of us. You have helped to shape me into the woman I am and have taught me many life lessons that I will carry with me forever.

I was with you the day you found out you had cancer, and it was one of the hardest days I have had to go through. You have always meant so much to me, and it broke my heart.

When I found out you were sick, I never thought of you as a different man. You have always been a fighter, and this would be just another battle for you to handle.

After cancer took over, you had to start kidney dialysis, had blood clots in your leg, and faced many other battles. Chemo and radiation beat you down, and you got back up.

I know it is getting tough trying to keep up your spirits and keep pushing through, but you’ve got this.

You have always been a bright ray of sunshine in our lives, and you still are. You’ve done so much to make things great for other people, whether it was the family or other veterans, as you started boats4vets.

You are an amazing man, and I love you so very much. You mean the world to me and to everyone around you.

Never stop fighting.

Love,

Sarah
