Beauty advertisements should be more realistic

Jessica Rathburn

Everyday, Americans are bombarded with advertisements released by topnotch companies.

These advertisements appear on social media, television, and radio stations without any warning.

Many of these ads are degrading, displaying ideal body types and unrealistic scenarios.

They leave people feeling bad about their bodies and life decisions.

After seeing these ads over and over again, people feel the need to go buy these products because they believe it’s going to free them from all their insecurities.

I’m sorry, but spraying a designer perfume on your skin isn’t going to cause you to find the love of your life or boost your confidence.

That’s just ridiculous.

Growing up, I always felt comfortable in my own shoes. I loved talking to people and expressing myself.

That all changed once I headed to middle school.

I became shy, awkward, and insecure about my looks. I was constantly comparing myself to other people and wishing I was somebody else.

As I got older, I started to spend more time on social media. While doing this, I began to see pictures and ads of A-list celebrities and models with perfect features.

These images made me feel even worse about myself.

Time after time, we see the same image. A skinny, sun-tanned girl posing for the camera with her built prince charming on a beach.

Advertisements should be showcasing different races, body types, and realistic plots.

When companies refuse to manufacture products for all types of people, they lose consumers. If they geared their products to everyone, they would sell more merchandise.

We choose the brands we purchase from.

Try avoiding brands that use provocative images to sell their products, and buy from companies that showcase all types of men and women.

You will feel better about yourself and everyone else.
