Freshman Saniaa Walker has been a recurring name in Kearsley’s girls track and field meets. At their most recent competition, the Goodrich Invitational on Friday, May 4, Walker took first in two individual events, the 100- and 200-meter dashes, and her relay team took first in the 1600 relay.

Walker ran the 100 with a time of 13.47 seconds, the 200 with a personal record of 26.98, and the relay team, consisting of Walker, Madison Jordan, Stacia Tipton, and Sydney Walker, took first in 4:27.58.

Among three events, Walker scored a total of 22.5 points out of Kearsley’s 49, which was good enough for sixth place at the invitational.

Goodrich won the meet (109 points), Byron (93.5) was second, and North Branch (71) finished third.

Another relay team scored by placing in the top six. This team consisted of Amelia Boggs, Jakeira Walsh, Sierra Walker, and Stacia Tipton. The team finished the race in 56.19, finishing third. This relay team also placed fifth in the 800 with a time of 2:01.36.

Kearsley’s 3200-relay team (Brooklynn Dever, Katie Lewis, Asia Donald, and Nisha Hartley) placed sixth with a time of 12:20.99.

The Hornets also had two athletes score in field events.

Junior Mary Wheeler took fifth in the discus with a toss of 90 feet, 3 inches.

Mackenzie Ramey, junior, took second in shot put with a personal record of 40-07, only 8.25 inches away from tying Kearsley’s record set by Tianna Kirkland in 1997.

The Hornets will compete next Wednesday, May 9, at Swartz Creek, in a double-dual meet against the Dragons and Linden.
