Seniors Emily Diehl (left) and Marysa Gatica play center defensive and striker, respectively, for the soccer team.

Senior Emily Diehl liked the large number of girls who tried out for the soccer team this year.

“We had a lot of girls tryout, so I think we will have two full teams,” Diehl said. “I think that our best opportunities to win are against Durand, Clio, and Carman-Ainsworth.”

Based on how the team performed last year, Diehl, who was second team All-League last year, commented on some advantages and disadvantages for the season.

“Some advantages that we have are the large amounts of people,” Diehl said. “With a lot of girls on each team, it allows room for more subs.

“Another advantage is that we have a lot of returning players. Some disadvantages include the lack of experience.”

Senior Marysa Gatica is looking forward for the season to begin. She also believes the Hornets have improved compared to last year.

“We have a few freshmen that have tried out and who have played before, so they are experienced,” Gatica said. “I think that we will be able to beat our record from last year.”

Coach Jason Gagne predicts that Kearsley can finish in the upper half of the league this season.

“I hope to be top five in the Flint Metro League at the end of the season” Gagne said.

The team’s first game is Friday, March 23, at Durand. Kickoff is at 4 p.m.
