Senior Emma Boychuk shows off her Metro League singles champion award after winning the league’s singles tournament Saturday, Feb. 16.

The girls bowling team finished its regular season with bowlers taking first and second place at the Flint Metro League Singles Tournament.

Five of Kearsley’s bowlers made the cut into the top 16 at Cherry Hill Lanes in Clarkston on Saturday, Feb. 17, eventually leading to one of them being crowned league singles champion.

That winner would be senior Emma Boychuk.

Boychuk won her first league singles title in the final when she went head-to-head against her teammate, junior Alexis Roof. Boychcuk won 223-181.

“It took a lot of hard work, focus, and time to get where I finished,” Boychuk said. “But I’m very proud about what I have accomplished.”

After the cuts, the individuals were matched up bracket style with the No. 1 seed bowling against the No. 16 seed, while the No. 2 took on the No. 15, and so on.

Even though Roof led the qualifying field as the No. 1 seed in the final 16 with a 660 series, which included a 277 actual game, she did not like her early performance.

“I had a rocky start, but I excelled the rest of the day,” Roof said.

Sophomore Imari Blond qualified second with 653 series, while Boychuk was third with a 634 series.

Blond ended the tournament after making it into the final four.

“I feel like I did fairly well,” Blond said. “I didn’t have a game under 200, and I felt like I threw the ball well.”

In the final four, Roof beat Flushing’s Hordyn Matheson. Roof’s 177 was good enough for the victory.

In the other semifinal, Boychuk defeated Blond 232-212.

Roof said even though she had to face her own teammate in the championship match, it felt great to be a part of the final, finishing as runner-up.
