Athletics aren’t the only important activities

Jessica Rathburn

Sports have been a big part of American culture for years.

People, however, seem to forget about all of the other activities.

There is nothing wrong with enjoying sports, but many fans take their love for their games way too far.

I have seen people who have been friends for years drift apart because a certain team won a game.

It’s truly ridiculous.

Growing up, I was never athletic. I always felt like I had to play sports in order to fit in because this is what everyone enjoyed.

As I got older and progressed through high school, I realized I shouldn’t do something just because everyone else is, and I found other interests — such as a capella choir.

As I have become more involved, I am beginning to realize that the art programs and other extracurricular activities do not receive the recognition they deserve.

Time after time, we see the football and basketball team being praised for their hard work, but rarely do we see that with other activities and clubs.

I can’t speak for others, but in choir we put in an extreme amount of work to prepare for our concerts. Dress rehearsals, costume fittings, fundraising for equipment, as well as many other elements that go into putting on an entertaining show.

One team isn’t more important than the other.

We should be rooting for all of the teams and clubs that take place here at KHS because we all work hard for what we love to do.

Try attending a variety of events or supporting a different type of club than you’re used to supporting.

Who knows? You just may find that you like it.
