Two wrestlers earned MHSAA district titles from the individual tournament at Gaylord on Saturday, Feb. 11.

Senior Dylan Tarrence is ranked No. 2 in the state for the 160-pound weight class.

Tarrence finished 41-0 after pinning his opponent Beau Caster from Marquette in 3:52 and winning the district championship.

In addition, junior Andy Ruhstorfer won his second consecutive MHSAA individual district title after defeating his opponent Hunter Larson from Escanaba in the final match in under two minutes.

Ruhstorfer was confident going into the match, wrestling at 130 pounds.

“I just had to clear my head and focus on finishing what I had started,” Ruhstorfer said. “I am glad to see my hard work is paying off.”

Together with Tarrence and Ruhstorfer, four other Hornets qualified to advance to the individual regional meet at Marysville on Saturday, Feb. 18.

In the 152-pound final bracket, junior Malik Davis placed second, falling to Bret Fedewa from St. Johns.

“I am happy how far some of my teammates and myself have made it this season. But we are still pushing to make it to The Palace,” Davis said.

Senior Reese Harburn wrestled in the 215 division, starting with a bye and finishing in second place after falling to competitor Dalton Ballantine from Clio.

Senior Marcus Moss took second for his 285-pound weight class, pinned at 1:20 by Joe Markham from Gaylord, Moss’ record now stands at 28-16.

Moss was proud of his team and looks forward to the Hornets’ future.

“It was great that I got to experience this with my teammates,” Moss said. “I am so proud of myself and my team. I am excited to have the opportunity to make it to the state meet.”

Senior Zach Elizondo took fourth at 119 pounds after falling to Emilio Sanchez from St. Johns. Elizondo’s record is 31-9.
